Maori History
Before Europeans settlers arrived the area around Birdlings flat including the wider Kaitorete Spit and Lake Ellesmere was an important area for local Maori tribes, Particularly Ngai Tahu. The lakes and surrounding wetlands provided lots of resources including fish,birds and flax, Which was important to the Maori way of life. The area was also traditionally a food gathering place.
European Settlement
The name birdlings flat comes from the Birldings family, Early European settlers William Birdling, an Englishman , arrived in New Zealand in the mid 19th century and established a farm near the current settlement. The family played an important way of developing the area leading to its agricultural growth.
Development And Industry
In the late 19th and early 20th century the region saw slow development, Farming remained the main activity with sheep and cattle farming being dominant. The coastal location also made it popular for fishing.
Natural Challenges
The settlement has faced many challenges over the years due to the exposed coast being subject to strong wind, high seas and erosion making life in birdling flat very rugged. Despite the challenges the community is still stable with many families living in the town for generations.
Modern Era
Today birdlings flat is known for its rocky beach and a community that hates chlorine. The area attracts people attracted to rock hunting, bird watching and enjoy the unpleasantly strong winds. The beach is famous for the stones that can be found there including quartz and jasper. However the strong currents and rough seas mean the beach is not safe for swimming.
