Year: 2023

End Of Year Reflection

When I came to Tangaroa I was excited because most of my friends were in this class. This year our main focus has been on kaitiakitanga. I have learnt about what kaitiakitanga means. In my group we learnt how to use kaitiakitanga for our waters. We learnt what three waters are and all the kinds of water. I have found this year harder than last year in the education sector. But I also found this year better than last year because we have had lots of other opportunities like surfing and koru games. I think I have achieved all my goals with better handwriting because when I was in Talei’s group where she made us do handwriting every day. I think I have failed at having better creativity because I struggle to think of ideas. Next year I want to improve my math work with fractions because I struggle with that. I could improve my work with fractions by understanding strategies for adding, dividing and multiplying fractions.

How To Do Side Stroke

Side stroke is a swimming stroke. The stroke is good because it doesn’t use much energy and your head never goes underneath the water. This is why it is used by lifeguards. The military also uses the sidestroke because it allows swimmer to swim more effectively and and reduces the body profile in water leading to them being harder to see in combat operation if surface swimming is required.

Writing

My name is Ethan Davis. I am a pet groomer from Brooklyn, New York. It was 3 months ago that my identity was stolen. I got a call from a man named Jagat saying “ Hello this is the microsoft refund department I am calling because of the cancellation of your microsoft account. I thought it was real so I gave them all my bank account information. They found my address and my full name. And started committing crimes under my name. It ranged from small crimes like stealing from shops to robbing banks and hijacking planes. When they would get arrested they would say I made them do it. I got arrested and sent to prison for life. I escaped and then turned to a life of crime. I started a mafia and found a few other ex-criminals to start. Our first heist was a small bank in outer Charlotte, North Carolina. It took weeks of planning for a 2 minute robbery. I got arrested and went back to prison. This time I agreed to teach the government and other major companies. How to protect themself from illegal activities. I wrote a book about my life and made back all the money I lost. I became a major investor in bitcoin and made 10s of millions of dollars.

Top Team

Yesterday we did top team. Top team is a game run by Canterbury Primary Sports. There were lots of activity where you would get a score and at the end they would add up the score and the team with the highest overall score won. We got to do water activities which I didn’t like because there was a cold wind. We also had the normal stuff like egg races and sack races. Overall it was fun because it was better than doing school work. I used all the RISE values.

Water safety

How to Float:

Floating is a very important survival skill for going in the water. Floating can save your life when you get stuck in a rip, Fall out of a boat or get stuck at sea. To float you must pull your shoulders back and lift your chest up. Keep your legs in the water in a downward position, Breathe normally and relax. If you were to fall out of a boat you could use anything lighter than water as a floatation device. For example things that are lighter than water are wood, ice and plastic.

Survival Strokes:

If you were to get stuck in the water far away from land you could use a survival stroke. A common mistake is using freestyle stroke to try and get to land quickly; this will use all your energy and you will drown. The most  effective survival stroke is either breaststroke because you can see in front of you. Or survival backstroke. Survival backstroke using floating and flapping your hands in the direction you want to go.

St John Training

We did medical training with St John. They taught us the dangers of where we are going to camp. And how to treat people that get injured at camp. The common injury’s were things like broken arms and legs, Burns and Hypothermia. They also taught us how to do CPR and bandage people.

I finished under 4:35 but came 4th the winner finished about 20 seconds ahead of me. Next we had sprints in sprints we have a qualifying round and a final. I came 3rd out of 7 in the qualifying round. After that we had discus the way discus worked was everybody had 2 attempts of a throw. My first throw was 15.71 and my second throw was a 14.9 the winner got 23.74 meters. After that we had high jump. We started at 0.9 meters and went up by 10 centre meters every time. We got to 1.20 meters and only the winner made that we then a jump out for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I was the only one that got 1.19 so I got 2nd and 3rd got 1.17 and 4th got 1.16.

Writing Week 3

Favourite Movie Character,

My favourite movie character is Paul Bäumer from the movie All Quiet on the western Front. He is a good character because he shows the mindset of young men coming into world war 1. He shows that they did not know how bad the war would be. The most annoying Part of the movie is the fact that he dies a few seconds from the end of the war.

What Would I Like To Invent,

I would like to invent cooling bed pillows and bed sheets because I hate in summer when the bed is too hot and I can’t sleep. I don’t know if cooling pillows are already a thing but I don’t think they would be very effective. I think that it wouldn’t be hard to make because you just need a cooler in the sheets.

What Makes My school Special,

My school is special because it has many awards for the design of the build and playgrounds and garden. It is also special because we have lots of sports fields and basketball courts. We also have some of the best basketball and rugby teams in Christchurch.

Human Life Cycle

First the egg in the mother is fertilised by the sperm from the father and turns into an embryo inside the mothers womb. An embryo is an developmental stage of development for the baby while in the uterus of the mother. The baby then becomes a fetus after the 10th week of pregnancy. The majority of growth in body weight and length happens in this stage. The fetus can’t breath, eat or drink by itself.

After nine months in the womb the baby is born. In everywhere but Korea the infant is considered 0 years old. Infants cry when they fell hungry, thirsty or uncomfortable. Infants are normally fed on the mothers milk.

At ages 1-3 the child is considered a toddler. At this age they can walk, crawl and even say a few words. At this age they also start making friends. At ages 3-5 the child is considered a preschooler. At this age they can run and talk fluent English they also start to learn how to read. At 5 years old kids are around 3,1 ft. From ages 5-12 they are considered primary children. At around this age most children will experience a growth spurt.

At the teenage age 13-20 kids reach the end of their growth spurt and usually start finding partners. At adult age 20-65 adults start having kids and getting jobs to buy houses and other needs to provided for their family’s. At elderly age 65-100 this is where people start quitting their jobs and start a petition and this age you retire until the end of your life.

Instructions

We have been learning about the following instructions. We learnt it is important to follow instructions in an academic setting because it can improve grades by making sure you do the right thing. Examples of instructions are like put the cat on the counter top and do not try to eat the flowers.
